Performance Management

An effective manager will always delegate their work and responsibilities to their team members and collaboratively they will move towards achieving mutual goals. Delegation of work accelerates your success as it allows you to save time, motivate teammates, develop team member skills, and groom successors. Why people don’t delegate?

To understand the importance of delegation, one needs to understand why people are reluctant to delegate their work. Most people find the delegation of work very difficult, as it requires a lot of effort. After all, it is easier for you to execute your ideas efficiently rather than explaining those ideas to someone else and then take out time to see what the other person has done. If it is wrong then explain and correct the other person again till the work is finally done to your satisfaction.

All this appears to be a real pressure and work overload on the surface level because you could have done the work yourself in half the time. But the question is “Is it a good use of your time?”

By doing all the work yourself, only a limited amount of work gets accomplished in a day, however hard you try. As a result, your success and growth is constrained. To become successful and grab the opportunities available to you, you need to take other people’s help, even if it requires spending some of your precious time in training them.

By meaningfully involving other people in a project, not only do they get to learn and grow their skills, but also get trained for future. Delegation enables you in succession planning.

Delegation sets the entire team for higher goals. Without delegation , one needs to depend on the outside support to allow progression and succession in the company. But can you delegate anything just to free yourself? No, delegation of work requires a careful planning. Let us understand how the work can be delegated.

How to Delegate?

When the delegation of responsibilities is done properly, it becomes a win – win opportunity for both the manager and the subordinate. To delegate responsibilities, you need to:

  • Consider the level of delegation: While delegating, consider your subordinate’s experience, time, knowledge, and skills needed to perform the delegated task.
  • Consider the suitability of the task: Consider the suitability of the task that you want to delegate. For example, the tasks that require you to maintain a high level of confidentiality should not be delegated.
  • Consider resources required: While delegating, consider money, materials, premises, people, location, equipment, and other related services that are required to involve people in the task.
  • Consider methods of checking and controlling: Agree with your subordinate(s) on job deadlines, complexity of work, methods of monitoring and the progress of work while delegating a task. If you fail to do this, you may have conflicts and problems.

Empxtrack application allows you to delegate your work efficiently. The Goalsheet module allows you to agree on the common goals with your subordinates and track them , the Appraisal module allows you to rate your subordinate’s performance, and the Succession Planning module allows you to create succession plans for each key position and map employees to the succession plans with a milestone based development plan.
